Why you need to write
“Thinking is fundamental to success in any venture, and learning how to write will teach you how to think.” These are words I picked up from an article by Jeff Bradford, a former journalist with 30+ years as a PR professional. These words precisely summarize this article but I hope and believe you’ll get something more. Over 4 billion people around the world consume internet according to We are social, global digital report. The internet comes with a wealth of information, but how many people would be candid to say they produce content even as they consume?
Critical thinking and Action
I wouldn’t be wrong to say that people who regularly publish content on various knowledge topics continue to have a better understanding and nurture critical thinking in those areas. This results in not only forming one’s opinion about that area but also collecting other people’s perspectives when they share their written piece. We consume information on our areas of interests but what views do we hold of the same? The positive thing about this is that our writing could spark action as we are thinking critically and expressing it in text.
Asking the right questions
If you are a serious writer, you will want to ask the deep questions. You would want to know the story behind the story. By asking the right questions you get the right answers that can be acted upon. I like to think that answers rule the world. If people don’t have answers to the questions they have or issues, how will they solve them? Therefore writing can and it does play a role in finding these answers.
Cultivate a cause/develop a brand
Do you have a cause or interest that you incline to? Writing in the form of storytelling could be a good way to tend to that interest. For instance, if you have an interest in community or leadership, you could blog about it and have an amazing journey while at it. People will relate to stories about a cause or a brand, so think about it when you want to cultivate it. Also, it exposes you to possible opportunities including work opportunities. Every brand wants to connect to its audience and one way of doing this is through storytelling.
Many people consume different types of content but to some, they stop there-they don’t produce any content. Everyone has a voice, and probably a cause that they incline to and just like any art, writing can be just want you need to grow. Reflect on the three points that I have highlighted and it could be just what you need for your personal and even career life development. For me, I’m sold!
